Why an elephant logo

This Conference is jointly organized by several Institutions operating in the city of Catania in Sicily. The symbol of the city of Catania is the Sicilian elephant. In fact, Sicily in the old times (thousands years before Christ) was populated by a peculiar species of small elephant with the dimension of a large size dog. Bones of this elephant have been found throughout the island. A real size extremely ancient statue of the elephant carved from solid lava and surmounted by an Egyptian obelisk can be observed at the center of the piazza Duomo in Catania. The Sicilian elephant will hence be both our logo and our mascot.
